How to Write a Research Paper

Writing a research paper is a fundamental part of presenting your project at INNOVATE GERMANY. A well-prepared research paper clearly communicates your ideas, methodology, and findings, allowing jury members to understand the scientific depth, originality, and impact of your work. The following guidelines are designed to support participants at different levels in structuring their research effectively and professionally.

For a Good StartPhases 1 & 2: Foundations of Research

A strong research paper begins with curiosity, integrity, and careful preparation. The first two phases focus on developing a meaningful research idea and building a reliable academic foundation.

Start with passion and purpose

Choose a topic that genuinely interests you and connects to real-world challenges. Strong projects often address issues in STEM, sustainability, engineering, environmental science, health, or technology.

Key steps:

  • Start with a broad area you care about
  • Narrow your focus to a specific, researchable topic
  • Formulate a clear and testable research question or hypothesis
  • Use questions such as:
    • How does…
    • What is the effect of…
    • To what extent…

Build your research on reliable and ethical foundations

High-quality research depends on trustworthy sources and responsible academic conduct.

Guidelines:

  • Use reliable academic sources such as:
    • Google Scholar
    • JSTOR
    • ScienceDirect
    • Peer-reviewed journals and academic books
  • Avoid using Wikipedia or non-reviewed personal blogs as primary sources

Literature review expectations:

  • Go beyond summarizing sources
  • Identify patterns, key ideas, and differing perspectives
  • Position your project within existing research

Academic integrity is mandatory.
Plagiarism, including unattributed use of ideas or text, is strictly prohibited.

Transparency and honesty are essential

  • Use one recognized citation style consistently (APA, MLA, IEEE, or Chicago)
  • Include a complete bibliography listing all sources used

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools

  • AI tools may be used only as a support tool, for example:
    • Brainstorming ideas
    • Improving language clarity
    • Organizing structure
  • Any content generated or significantly modified using AI must be clearly declared and referenced in the research paper.
  • Fully AI-generated texts, projects, or research papers are not permitted and will be considered a violation of academic integrity.
  • Submissions that rely predominantly on AI-generated content may be disqualified from the competition.

The final research paper must reflect the student’s own understanding, analysis, and original work.

Research Methodology

The Research Methodology section explains how your project was conducted. It must clearly demonstrate a structured and systematic research approach appropriate to your category and reflect the principles of the scientific method or a well-defined design and development process.

A strong methodology includes:

  • A clear procedural plan
  • Defined variables and controls (where applicable)
  • Reliable data collection methods
  • Ethical and safety considerations

Your methodology should clearly describe:

  • The steps followed during your investigation or development process
  • The independent and dependent variables (if applicable)
  • Any controlled variables
  • How accuracy, fairness, and repeatability were ensured

Projects must follow ethical guidelines and ensure safety for people, data, and the environment.

Collecting original data

Primary data projects involve collecting new and original data through experiments, testing, or direct measurement.

Examples include:

  • Engineering & Mathematics – Physics
Laboratory experiments, engineering tests, simulations, and measurements
  • Environmental Sciences & Chemistry
Field studies, laboratory analysis, environmental testing, chemical experiments
  • Health Sciences & Biology
Controlled experiments, biological observations, laboratory-based research
(Human or animal testing must follow strict ethical standards and may require prior approval.)
  • AI & Computer Science
Algorithm development, model training, performance testing, simulations
  • Game Design
Game mechanics testing, user interaction testing, performance evaluation
  • Art & Creative Writing
Concept development, creative process documentation, thematic analysis

Analyzing existing data

Secondary data projects focus on analyzing data collected by others and applying it to new questions or solutions.

Examples include:

  • Data from government departments and public institutions
  • Public scientific databases and research repositories
  • Data published by universities, research institutes, or large organizations

When using secondary data:

  • Clearly identify and reference all data sources
  • Explain why the data is reliable and relevant
  • Describe how the data was processed and analyzed

All projects must demonstrate:

  • Ethical responsibility
  • Transparency in data use and analysis
  • Respect for environmental and safety standards
  • Academic honesty and originality

Any violation of ethical standards may result in disqualification.

Research Paper Structure

All research papers must include the following sections in the order listed below:

The title page must include:

  • Project title
  • Author(s) name(s)
  • School name
  • City / State
  • Country
  • Competition category

The introduction should:

  • Present the central research problem or topic
  • Explain the rationale (why the topic is important)
  • Provide relevant background information
  • Clearly state the research question or hypothesis
  • Include a brief road map outlining the structure of the paper

This section must provide a detailed and systematic description of how the research was conducted.

Include:

  • Experimental or analytical methods
  • Data collection procedures
  • Analysis techniques, algorithms, or tools used
  • Steps taken to ensure reliability and repeatability

The methodology must be clear enough for others to understand and replicate the process.

This section reports the outcomes of the research.

Guidelines:

  • Present results that directly support your conclusions
  • Use tables, graphs, or figures where appropriate
  • Ensure all visuals are clearly labeled and referenced

⚠️ Projects without results or findings will not be accepted.

The discussion explains the meaning and significance of your results.

You should:

  • Interpret your findings clearly
